Title Slip Casting of Silt from Philippine Nickel Laterite Ore for Thick Tile Production

Abstract Mining operations of laterite ores are usually involved with removal of thick topsoil. Heavy rains on mined areas increase runoff flowing to low areas. Mining companies construct siltation ponds at strategic locations to catch runoff and to minimize silted wastewater drifting to nearby aquatic bodies. This study investigated silts from siltation ponds of a Nickel laterite mine in the Philippines for suitability in casting tiles with wet dimensions, 1.45x20x20 cm (TxLxW). Viscosity at continuous stirring mode and pH of slips were evaluated for thickest possible cast. Silt from high elevated pond HS contained low residues than silt of low elevated pond LS. Dry silt powders were homogenously mixed with water to produce pure silt slips PSS. Feldspar was added to PSS to create various formulated silt slips FSS. Slips were deflocculated by sodium silicate. Tiles were fired at 800 Celsius. Upon increasing the amount of deflocculant to the slips, PSS of LS attained increasing fluidity while PSS of HS exhibited bell shaped viscosity wherein its fluidity increased only at 1.8wt% of deflocculant passing pH 11. Slips of LS attained higher fluidity even with lower deflocculant demand than HS slips even if they have the same source of ore. FSS of LS can produce wet solid thick cast of 1.450 centimeters resulting to 1.141 centimeter thick fired tiles which is promising for casting complex solid thick cast.
