Abstract Over the years, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been used by both academic and business institutions in the conduct of training and certification. Similarly, the Google Certified Educator (GCE) is a professional development program that offers a MOOC-based training program and online certification for teachers across the globe. For participants to get certified, they should pass a performance-based examination which is composed mostly of tasks that measure competence in basic computer tools (i.e. word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, etc.) and online applications used in the classroom setting. While a MOOC-based training program was introduced to prepare for the examination, there are other activities that the teachers conducted or participated in to supplement the MOOC experience. This study explored the preparation practices of GCE passers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. Using qualitative methods, the research presented types of passers based on their preparation practices. Further, the role of Southeast Asian culture is examined in the context of MOOC and practices in preparing for an online certification.
