| Abstract | Dr. Jose Rizal's renowned statement emphasizes the Filipino youth as the nation's beacon of hope, inspiring the need to nurture and invest in their development. Nonetheless, what if these very same youth, who are perceived as the country's hope, turn out to be a burden on the nation instead? This survey utilized a quantitative survey design to investigate the factors contributing to school dropouts among males and females. The sample was selected purposively and only included out-of-school youth from specific locations. Snowball sampling was also used to locate other out-of-school youth. The study had 200 respondents, with 96 females and 104 males. A researcher-made Likert scale questionnaire was used to gather data, and descriptive statistics, such as frequency and percentage, to examine and interpret the data. Interview questions for teachers were also utilized to get their perspectives on the possible reasons students for leaving school. The Results revealed that lack of interest in school and good relationships with parents were the primary reasons for males. At the same time, early marriage, pregnancy, and financial difficulties caused by poverty were the main reasons for females. For a teacher, socio-economic is the primary reason for the students leaving school, and encountering difficult subjects such as Math and science may also contribute to losing their interest to study that deal with solving and computations. The study recommends that educational institutions and stakeholders create a gender-responsive strategy that considers gender and includes psychological support to foster successful academic experiences for all genders. |
