Abstract Using the narratological approach, specifically Labov and Waletzky’s model, this study examines the structure and tragic realities reflected in the narratives of the Sendong (Washi) survivors in three severely affected barangays of Iligan City: Hinaplanon, Santiago, and Sta. Filomena. Forty personal experience narratives were collected through audio recordings, transcribed, coded using Labov and Waletzky’s model, and subsequently analyzed. The findings reveal that the Sendong narrative structure, which encompasses the types of personal experiences and narrative schemas, exposes various tragic realities such as psycho-emotional conditions and dilemmas related to evacuation and relocation housing in the aftermath of Sendong. Additionally, cultural-specific attributes, including the inclusion of other people’s experiences and the joiner's experience, as well as the presence of time-bending techniques, are evident in the Sendong narratives. These findings imply that Labov and Waletzky’s model is not universally applicable since it fails to capture culture-specific features found in Sendong narratives. Moreover, the narratives, by unveiling the tragic realities through their structure, redefine the concept of the "Sendong tragedy" not merely as a natural calamity but also as a social, economic, and political disaster collectively experienced by the survivors.
